Natural Product Development and Discovery Purpose:To find potential cures for human ailment. Specifically, we are testing extracts for antibiotic activity. Does the extract Kill/Prevent growth in bacteria? Procedure (Overview): 1. Gathered plant material 2. Made extracts(Water&Methanol- MeOH) 3. Filtered extracts 4. Poured agar plates 5. Spread bacteria on agar 6. Place filter paper discs on bacteria 7. Grow over night Hypothesis: (+)Result: no bacteria/ less bacteria around filter (-) Result: bacteria growing around filter true positive in all 3 replicates. Conclusion: When we tested extracts for antibiotic activity, we found the potential cure for human ailments. We waited few days to see if the extract would kill or prevent the growth in bacteria. There were antimicrobial activity occurred in sides 2 and 4 for both extracts because there was clearing. Also, as expected, antimicrobial activity occurred to (+) because it's known as antibiotic (Kills bacteria). As expected, (-) didn't have clearings (The bacteria didn't get killed) because it was just water. Possible Errors: We left the samples too long without taking the data. Why is biodiversity important? This is important to biotech because it covers a variety of techniques that allow changes and improvements in living organisms to provide desirable product and environment for human use. It's used for conservation, evaluation, and utilization of biodiversity. Also, it will help to cure diseases.
