Purpose/goal: to find out how organisms evolved into more complex organisms and how their body changed through adapting into the new environments. Past three weeks, Hana and I were striving to achieve our goal by dissecting six different organisms: Sponge, jellyfish, squid, worm, fish and frog. We also compared each organisms how they are different and related. We looked each organisms very closely under the microscopes and found out their body plan/symmetry, feeding, respiration, circulation, excretion, response, reproduction, germ layers, cephalization, coelom, and early development.
Reflection(Dissection): This project was really interesting because we got to dissect many organisms. I don't believe in evolution but it was interesting to learn about it and experience it through dissecting. Through this project, I learned how to use dissecting tools and how to be open minded to the things that I don't agree with. I had a very cooperative partner so we worked well together. We always wanted to discover more things than what the instructions told us to do. For example, we dissected their eyes and brains. One of the problems we had was identifying each internal organs. The videos and our teacher helped us a lot with this problem so we were able to identify all the internal organs(Thank you Dr. LB!). Another problem we had was making the clean cut and making sure to not cut the internal organs. Overall, this project was very fun and interesting.
Reflection (Revolution Unit/Socratic Seminar): The revolution unit was very interesting. I don't personally believe in it because I believe in creation. However, I think it was a good opportunity to learn the opposite of what I believe. Through this, I was able to learn to respect different ideas and theories. Also, I learned many different types of theories that support evolution. Although, my class and I thought it wasn't fair for the us to only learn about one side(evolution). So, our teacher thought it was a good idea to do a Socratic seminar on Creation VS Evolution. October 16th, in Dr.LB's class, we had our Socratic seminar. I tried my best to prepare for this discussion in the midst of my busy schedule because I thought it would be a great chance to share the scientific point of creation that people has never heard of. Many times, people believe in evolution because there are many theories that support it and they think creation is just a belief/religion that you just need to believe by faith. However, as I was preparing for this seminar, I discovered even more about how creation/bible is true. I was amazed and was able to gain more faith in what I believe because there are many scientific evidence that support it. Socratic seminar went well except we didn't have much time to discuss. There are so much more evidence to share about creationism and many people had questions but we just did not have much time. I hope we have another time to talk about this topic or bring in guest speaker to talk about creationism to spend more time on it. Overall, this evolution unit and Socratic seminar was a great experience and I learned a lot from this :)
