Purpose: to find our genotype and to discover where our ancestors are from by taking out our DNA from the cheek cells and looking at the length of our alu genes. The results should be either Heterozygous (+/ -) Homozygous ( + ) Homozygous ( - )
Results/Analysis: I found out that my genotype is heterozygous which means I have both ( + ) and ( - ). This also means that one of my parents have homozygous ( - ) and the other have homozygous ( + ) or have both ( - ) & ( + ). If you look at the picture on the left what each results should look like: ⚫ Heterozygous: two red lines ⚫ Homozygous ( - ): One bottom line ⚫ Homozygous ( + ): One top line As you can see in the picture on the right, my result has two lines so I am heterozygous.
MY RESULT
Conclusion: First, we isolated DNA from cheek cells by gargling salt water for about 1 minute then spit it back out. Then, we used PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) to determine genotype alu locus. We waited for about a day then we analyzed the results by looking at gel electrophoresis under UV trans illuminator. My group really enjoyed this lab. At first, it was hard because we had to be very precise using micro pipets. However, after many few practices, we got better. Surprisingly, we didn't have any mistakes or errors because we listened to the instructions well and worked together as a team helping each other. Also, I was able to find my genotype successfully.
