Metal, water, wood, fire, and earth; I would say these are the basic elements of the material world. I was born in Korea, and I grew up in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) backgrounds. TMC use the five elements theory explaining the relationship between the human body and the natural environment; they diagnoses and treats diseases based on the theory of the five elements harmony of yin and yang. My mother studied ear reflexology; again, based on the five elements theory, and have been help treating many patients. Therefore, ever since I was little, I have been exposed how this theory was always used as a baseline of diagnosis of treatments. The Yin and Yang theory emphasize that all things exist as inseparable and contradictory opposites, such as top-bottom, high-low, female-male, and so forth. The two opposites attract and complement each other. Depending on the attraction of five elements, the operation of universe is determined. Interaction among the elements is viewed in terms of four cycles. Inter-promoting denotes the principle whereby each of the elements nurtures, produces, and benefits another specific element. Five Elements theory established the relationship between the five elements, phenomena, and the organs. Wood represents the spring season, which associates with elements like hope, life, growth, and exuberance. After the desperation of winter, spring brings back a life. It is the fastest energetically moving of the elements upward and out like a tree. Fire represents the season of summer. It is in this season that nature is in full bloom and in its fullest expansion. It symbolizes the power of maturity and is an energy that is expressed through sharing, joy, exuberance, passion, and love. Earth represents the season of late summer. It’s referred as the harvest season when everything has reached its peak ripeness and abundance. Metal represents a season of fall when all the leaves fall from the trees. This represents how the leaves must fall for new ones to grow in the spring because it will feed the soil to further spur growth in the coming seasons. It is the beginning of low energy. Lastly, water represents the winter season when it's referred as a time to rest, recharge, and build strength. It’s symbolizing the cleansing and flexibility. It has high energy, preparing for spring. This five elements theory is also explained in Western physics. Complementarity principle, proposed by physicist Niels Bohr, states that material appearing in the universe from pure energy always appears as a pair of negative and positive They are complementary to each other, such as the particles of light and the duality of waves. The negative and positive pairs generated from pure energy are extinguished and converted to pure energy, and pure energy again produces materials in negative-positive pairs. The complementarity of the particle-like and the wave-like behavior of light brings together "contradictory". Depending on the five fundamental forces(gravitational, electromagnetic, soft nuclear and hard nuclear), phenomena world’s substance is portrayed as the theory of five elements. That is solid, liquid, gas, plasma, and dark matter. According to the East medicine, it would be the metal, water, wood, fire, and earth. Eastern medicine advanced with the background of the five elements theory. It pairs the five elements to five organs: wood(liver), fire(heart), earth(spleen), metal(lung), and water(kidney). The function of each organ has similar properties as the five elements. This theory explains the interrelationship of organs in the human body by applying the coexistence and mutuality of the five elements. It is diagnosing and treating diseases through the connection of body and mind and the connection of organs to organs. It is an important basic principle to diagnose and treat diseases. With the perspective of how the planet and human being affected and interrelated by five elements theory, East medicine, and Western physics has been advancing. Ever since I was little, there were many people who came to my house to be diagnosed through medicine that was built upon the five elements theory. People with the diverse disease came to my house and I’ve witnessed many of them getting healed. When my brothers and I were sick, my mom gave medical treatment that was built upon the five elements theory. Especially, when I had cold, headache, or indigestion, she treated me with ear reflexology and I’ve experienced getting better. My mother’s physical condition is very fragile and she’s been getting sick a lot. Due to her anemia, she has a half-life level of red blood cell compared to others. Her weakest organ is her spleen, as she was diagnosed. Based on the five elements theory, a person with a weak spleen is unable to stand humidity and have a weak immunity, poor digestion, dry skin, and irritated mouth. Such a person has many thoughts and love sweets. Eating yellow foods will benefit their spleen. Surprisingly, my mother actually has those exact symptoms. Her digestion is really slow, so she needs to divide the amounts of food to eat throughout the day. In Fiji where my family used to live, it rained a lot since it’s an island. In those days, my mother had a hard time because she felt heavy or like her body was drowning in water. In addition, due to frequent inflammation in her neck and mouth, it was often difficult for her to eat food. Not only her sickness but she also shows a tendency to love sweets, it was exciting to witness how the symptoms and characteristics of my mother’s body exactly aligned with the five elements theory of “earth”. This excitement led me to be hopeful for implementing the Eastern medicine into researching, diagnosing a disease when I become a doctor.
